Colour Match Your Skin
I’m baaaack! Returning from my routine morning stroll to my neighbourhood Fait Maison.
Fresh warm croissants nicely tucked under my arm in a wrinkly brown bag and a generous slice of their ‘give up on your diet, you would’ – carrot cake. Part of my morning ritual. I got a-thinking about what a friend of mine brought up at our afternoon tea meet up at the lovely Celeste (one of the prettiest rooms for afternoon tea I might add with delicately gilded cornices), the previous week.
Why is it that some colours make us pop? and some don’t?
How does colour association affect the viewer’s perception?
What is the first thing that springs to mind when you view colour on a person of a particular shade?
How do we test if we are warm, neutral or cool?
Wearing colour is a tricky concept. Most of us champion neutrals even possibly coining the ‘minimalist’ look from this and anything that braved a multitude of colour would be labelled loud or eccentric. So how do we approach colour, to enhance rather than be intimidated by it?.
Celebrity personal stylists swear by colour consultations to obtain your ‘dominant’ colours and their complementary shades.
Colour Test Quickie
Check your veins to see if they run blue or green on your inner wrist. If they are blue you have cool undertones and green, warm. If you are like me and have both blue and green you may just be neutral.
What jewellery suits you better. Silver or Gold? Cool tone girls look better in Silver and Warm toned, Gold. If you are neutral the standout colour is less obvious.
What neutrals are best on you?
Typically white and blacks pop on cool toned girls and ivory and browns look amazing on warm toned girls. Neutral toned skin have the luxury of wearing most of these colours.
At a glance, cool toned girls are usually blonde, brunette or even black-haired but with blue, silver or ash undertones. The best way to decipher this I’ve found, is if you’ve been for a dye job at the salon and gone a few shades lighter than your natural shade whilst the colour is being stripped away by bleach or half way developing you usually can tell your undertones. Warm toned girls usually have gold, red or orange undertones.
These tests though I have found are only a guide and sometimes can leave you more confused. Especially if you are like me and have a combination of blue and green veins yet have reddish hair undertones. What if you’ve been chasing adventures around the globe and the by-product of a tatty passport is also a golden brown tan? This is why the colour experts have cleverly included Neutral toned skin for the ‘hard to determine’ skin tone like mine.
White Paper Test
Another way is to also hold a strip of white paper up to your face. Does your skin undertone look greenish, yellowish or brown? If so you have a warm skin tone. If your skin has an ash or grey undertone you may have a neutral skin tone. If you have other skin conditions that may affect the tone of your skin, for example, severe acne, visible facial veins or have spent a while topping up on your vitamin D, repeat this test on your inner arm or behind your ear. If you find you have a pink or blue undertone you may just have a cool skin tone.
Now we have figured out what skin tone we have, let’s explore our ‘wow’ colours!
